Adán Rana, born Adán Rodrigo Rana, was the second child of parents María De la Vega Rana and her husband Amando Rodrigo Fernández. The De la Vega family, an affluent family from San Pedro Sacatepéquez did not take too kindly to their youngest daughter’s relationship with Amando, the poor baker whom she had met during visits with her aunt during summer break. Practically growing up together, it had not been in the cards that they would end up married. At least, to the De la Vega family. However, as they grew older, a relationship blossomed between them and when they turned 18, Amando asked for her hand in marriage. Naturally, María’s father had no intention of allowing his daughter to marry a poor baker. Instead, she was forbidden from seeing him. Still, she kept seeing him in secret each time she would visit her aunt, the visits growing more and more frequent until her father finally realized. Upon his realization, María and Amando realized they had no other option than to run away if they wished to stay together. At 20, they fled to Guatemala City to be together. Amando managed to open a small bakery with whatever money he had saved up and María took up sowing, becoming a seamstress for a small business near the bakery.
Shortly after their arrival, they welcomed their first child; Adán’s older sister Mercedes. However, plunged into a civil war, Guatemala was a less than ideal place to raise a child, much less its capital. Killed in one of Rios Montt’s mass murders, the girl ended up passing at the young age of seven. It would be another ten years before they welcomed their second child.
Although towards the end of the civil war, the country was still marked by unrest and violence causing a tumultuous life for the small family. María and Amando’s fear for their son’s life was constant. When Adán was just four years old, Amando was pressured into fighting alongside the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca – or simply URNG. He believed in the cause but had no intention of leaving behind his wife and son.
A year into Amando’s involvement with the URNG, Adán, among a handful of other children of URNG fighters, were captured and tortured to gain intel about their parents’ whereabouts. However, Adán refused to speak, no matter what they put him through, he refused to betray his father. After months of hearing nothing, María feared that she had lost another child to what seemed a pointless war.
As the civil war came to an end, shortly following Adán’s sixth birthday, he was freed by an American military unit and returned to his mother. Upon receiving the news of his son’s survival, Amando returned to Guatemala City as well.
Unsurprisingly, the one and a half years spent imprisoned and tortured had broken Adán, leaving him with not only physical but mental scars as well. María and Amando tried to help him, but the boy had seen more destruction and experienced far more than any human was supposed to during a lifetime.
The entirety of the Guatemalan population had hoped the ending of the civil war would mark the beginning of something better, a more stable and safer country. However, it ultimately made room for organized crime, corruption and violence and a general sense of unbalance and unrest. Adán’s parents soon realized that if their son was to have any chance at recovery, it would not be what they had always known to be home.
They worked hard to set aside the money they would ultimately need to flee to the U.S. They succeeded in doing so, however, and made it to Brooklyn, New York where they settled down. It was a long journey, and it took a while for them to settle in and adjust to their new environment. Amando and María opened a small confectionery shop while Adán began attending public school.
At first, Brooklyn offered some much-needed normalcy and peace. However, marked by having grown up in a war-stricken country and the torture he had endured, Adán never quite managed to stay out of trouble. It would not be long before he began spending time with the wrong crowd, constantly getting involved in fights. Returning home one day at the age of 11, it was bad enough that his parents had to call an ambulance. Following that incident, he was put into a therapy program for immigrant children who grew up in war-stricken countries. This only led him to further rebel and the parents made the tough decision of sending him off to a strict private school.
Initially, his stay influenced him positively, making him the good Catholic boy his parents had always wanted. However, unaware of the methods with which he was forced to become this person, his parents did not realize that what he was being subjected to was not unlike the torture he had experienced when he was younger. It was not until the age of 16 when he had finished the program that his parents learned what he had been subjected to and they naturally blamed themselves for putting him through something so traumatic once more.
Although he had all cards stacked against him, Adán managed to finish a degree in criminal justice though not without some intense therapy. It had not been his intention to pursue a career in law enforcement, but it unfolded as such anyway as he applied to the FBI.
At the beginning of his career, Adán lost his father. While carrying out an undercover operation, Amando suffered a heart attack and to not put his mother and their friends at risk, and to not compromise the operation, he did not attend his funeral, still regretting it years later. Adán’s mother passed only a couple of months later and at that point, he was practically alone in the world with no family to come home to.
Despite all of the adversity Adán has faced, all of the evil and pain he has seen humans able to inflict, he still finds it within himself to try to see good in others. Although he can initially come off as cold, calculated even, as you get to know him you realize that it is all a façade. Behind the hardened exterior hides a passionate, warm, caring man. The façade was not only built out of instinct but a necessity as well; a tool to remain clear-headed and focused, to not allow emotions to cloud his judgement as he works.
Although built for work, it was inevitable that it would eventually that it would begin affecting his personal life as well and so it has become a way to shield his personal problems from the world and the world from his personal problems. He is naturally haunted by nightmares and sleepless nights because of the horrors he was put through as a child. Despite building these walls, however, it should never be mistaken for weakness. In fact, it has given him the strength to put up with extreme pain and suffering – physically and emotionally – without giving any physical indication of it.
What does escape the walls from time to time, however, is his temper. Although it would take more than a little to piss Adán off, once the seed has been planted, it only keeps growing. Stemming from his strong moral compass, it would be enough to set him off if someone was wronged. Ultimately, this strong moral compass tends to get him in trouble at times, but it also offers immense drive and acts as somewhat of a guide. Paired with his slight temper and reckless nature, at times, it becomes a bit of a time bomb.
The warm, kind-hearted man behind the cold exterior is someone anyone would be lucky to consider a friend. Adán is someone you can always rely on, a constant in your life. He is fiercely loyal and will go to great lengths to protect those he cares about, even risking his own life.
